A port is a location on a coast or a shore that contains one or more harbours where ships can dock. They are also used to transfer people and material to and from land. The locations of the ports are selected to optimise access to land and navigable water that can be used for commercial purposes and for shelter from waves and winds.
With a coastline of more than 7,500 km, India forms one of the biggest peninsulas in the world.  According to the Ministry of Shipping, around 95 per cent of India's trading by volume and 70 per cent by value is done through maritime transport.  It is serviced by 13 major ports, 200 minor and intermediate ports. The total 200 non-major ports are in the following States:- Maharashtra ,Gujarat , Tamil Nadu , Karnataka , Kerala ,Andhra Pradesh , Odisha , Goa , West Bengal , Daman and Diu , Lakshadweep , Pondicherry , and Andaman & Nicobar .
MAJOR SEA PORTS IN INDIA :
Jawaharlal Nehru Port (or Nhava Sheva Port):
 it is a major port of the Arabian Sea and handles large volume of domestic cargo traffic and international container traffic.
 Haldia Port:
 A major seaport located near the Hooghly River in West Bengal, it is the most important centre of jute industries. It is also known as the 'Gateway of Eastern India'.
Tuticorin Port- Tamil Nadu:
The artificial port of Tuticorin is a all weather port and who receive a large volume of international traffic. Port of Tuticorin are a used to be best port for maritime trade and pearl fishery on the bay of Bengal.
Mumbai port:
Mumbai Port is the largest port in India and handles bulk cargo traffic with its four jetties for handling Liquid chemicals, Crude and petroleum products. International container traffic of Mumbai Port is directed to the new and big Nhava Sheva port.
New Mangalore Port:
 Located at the southern tip of the Karnataka coast, it is also an important port in India. The port exports commodities such as granite stones, cashew, manganese and coffee and imports products like LPG, timber, cargo container and others.
