Jabalpur, known as the Marble city, has more than just rocks of Marble. Sure, the major source of income and the major contributor of the economy of the city is the cutting and polishing mills of the marbles, but there is lot more happening here than just polishing marbles.

Jabalpur
Marble Mountains

It is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, and is among the list of 100 cities, to be developed further as smart city. It is one of the most important Tier-2 city of the state and country. Post-Independence, the city developed drastically.

As any other city of India, Agriculture and related works are the backbone of the economy and is major contributor of the revenue in the city. The soil alluvial, and is most fertile quality of soil and hence produces good crops round the year. The presence of Narmada river solves the issue of water for irrigations. To cope up with the shortage during the summer, the dams are built to contain the water and flow through the canal for the farming activities. The Narmada’s basin is full with minerals and accumulates the alluvial soil, which produces crops like wheat, rice, millets etc.

The crops like pulses, oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane, etc. are further processed to make other related products. The finished products are then transported to the other parts of the region through transport services. The crops and other harvested products are brought here by the farmers from remote locations to get good price as the market here is big.

During 20th Century, the place was famous for making beedi. A beedi is a cigarette like tobacco product, made in India with rounding up the tobacco in the dried leaves. Businessmen realized that Tendu/Kendu leaves are ideal for beedi. The trees of Tendu/kendu was in abundance in the forests of Jabalpur. Hence, it became beedi making hub of the central India. It is now banned by the government to much extent.

The city is located in the center of the central state of India. i.e. it is in the middle of India. Its importance is realized by the government soon enough. Actually, it is at strategically best position for the manufacturing of defense related equipment.

In case of any national emergency and infiltration from the border, the center part of the country will remain safe for the maximum period of time in the worst-case scenario, as the infiltrators have to cross the entire landmass from every direction to destroy the production units to limit the availability of equipment like bullets and missiles for the armed forces, so that they can have upper hand.
Until then, the correct attacking plan will be carried out by the armed forces and the supply of the equipment will never stop.
Hence, the factories to make Guns (Gun Carriage Factory), Ordnance Factory to produce bullets, howitzers, rockets, bombs, mortars, grenades, shells, trucks, mine-protected vehicles, and bulletproof vehicles for the Indian Armed forces are situated here. People from the city are employed in these companies. The DGQA, is responsible for manufacturing, storing and supplying the weapons and equipment. As these factories are sensitive enough, it is guarded heavily as a fort by the forces.
The city is the Army headquarter of five states including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand. Other than that, many organizations present here includes the grenadiers regimental center, 1 signal training center, College of material management, J & K Rifles Regimental Center, 506 Army Base Workshop, Military Hospital, Military Dairy Farm, HQ Recruiting zone etc.

The limestone products are other major source of income for the people here. The section of marble mountains is auctioned off and given on lease to the government. The leaser then cut the marbles or limestones and sends it to further process in the factories and the final product is then transported to the rest of the country via transporting services. The marble from Jabalpur is very famous in the entire country. Jabalpur is the biggest supplier of the marble of the entire country’s need. All the marble used in the country, is from any one of the mountain in the city.

For the production of electrical goods there are many factories established in the city. The product is then supplied to local and national market for consumption.
Other sectors that are present here are garment manufacturing, IT, education, electrical goods, limestone products, building materials, glassware, telephone parts, furniture, foodstuffs, steel structures, cement, tobacco products, industrial-safety goods etc.
The city is well connected with the other major important cities, like Bhopal, Lucknow, Raipur, Bilaspur, Varanasi, Allahabad, Bangalore, etc. The existence State highway and National highway makes the transportation easier and hassle free. The state bus service connects the remote areas and satellite towns so that they can transport the products to the bigger market.
Jabalpur Junction is the headquarter of the West Central Railways. It has direct connectivity to places like as direct service to Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Nagpur, Surat, Pune, Patna, Ludhiana, Jammu, Vasco-Da-Gama, Amravati, Coimbatore, Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi, Kanpur, Vadodara, etc.

Air services is also available for major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Allahabad, etc.
The presence of all the modes of transportation ensure faster deliveries of goods and services to and from other parts of the country.
The basic requirement of the infrastructure for the e-commerce companies is good connectivity. Since the city has got it, the presence of e-commerce companies is growing. The companies are setting up inventories there to further increase the radius of services to remote locations.
The city also attracts many tourists. There are many waterfalls, national parks, Sanchi Stupa, etc. which attracts tourists from the whole country. The unique, attractive, and amusing advertisement of the Madhya Pradesh tourism is known to all. The tagline says “Hindustan Ka Dil Dekho” is rightly said.
